Facebook during FInals

Tonight marks 8 days until I am finished with all of my finals and papers. Everyone I have talked to is completely buried in work, spending 8 hours of their day in Fondren Library or Bridwell. I decided it was time for a nice study break, and that of course for me means facebook. I got on and saw that I have 215 friends currently online. As you can imagine, most of my friends are from SMU or colleges nearby that are also in finals. I couldn't believe that so many people were on facebook at a time like this, but then again, so was I. Facebook is the biggest distraction hands down for me. Whenever I need to do any sort of research or paper on my laptop I go directly to facebook before opening any documents or browsers. Clicking www.fa...just seems like a habit to my fingers. I don't quite understand why it is I feel so many of us are addicted to facebook. I will admit its easy to get lost in a world of accessing all 1000 of your friends pictures and comments in the click of a button, but that shouldn't be anything of dying importance.

One of my best friends even went so far as to have her roommate change her facebook password for the rest of the week so that she wouldn't have a way to get on and check. At first I laughed at her because it seemed so ridiculous that she couldn't have any self control, but I totally get it now. If I didn't have facebook for this week I would be more productive. It is really interesting how true it is the things that we have learned this semester about our brain and the internet. When I am doing anything on my computer I can't help but want to talk to my friends on facbeook as I do it. I'm not sure if I will go as far as my friend did about giving away the rights to getting on, but I hope my self control gets better as finals week continues.

  1. I am currently in the library and I look behind me and see more than a handful of kids on their computer in just one section of Fondren...of course on Facebook. It feels like it is taking over college campuses and prohibiting our ability to stay focussed. I thought about deactivating my Facebook during this time of stress but I too thought that was a bit ridiculous and hoped that I would be able to control myself. I would love to know how we all got so addicted so fast! I'm beginning to get concerned.

  2. Facebook seems to be a problem for a lot of people and it is probably a good idea to just delete it for the week. You will never regret deleting your facebook during finals, but you will definetly regret preforming poorly because you spent too much on facebook. My brother had this problem and he just flat out deleted his account. I didn't think it would last long, but it's been since the fall and he's still holding strong (despite the occasional times when he hacks on mine).

  3. I agree, Facebook has become more of a distraction for all college students since there are so many more applications. When I was a junior in high school, I deactivated my Facebook for Lent. Although it was difficult to go 40 days without Facebook I managed to live. If Facebook is such a distraction from you I would recommend deleting it for the week and reward yourself with it when finals are over!

  4. I am doing my final research paper for lovely Mrs. Channell on this very same topic. Facebook during finals is as compelling as an ice cream cone in July. I've tried to create habits like only logging in before and after I have finished studying in one sitting. But most of my attempts are in vain as I am distracted from my school work. I didn't have Facebook the first eight weeks of this semester, and it was great looking back at it. It starts to become a factor that doesn't tease you anymore.

  5. Facebook has become a major distraction. I caught myself getting on it periodically when I was studying. I think some people have become emotionally dependent on facebook. But in general, the Internet is a distraction. Throughout the time I was studying I checked at least 5 different websites. And although it takes you away from studying I think the Internet is a good way to take a mental break.

  6. Facebook is definitely my biggest distraction especially when it comes to studying for exams or getting my work done. Just like Frannie my first instinct when I open up my computer screen is to click on Facebook and see if I have any messages or notifications. Even if I do not it is hard not to get distracted by pictures or wall posts. Sometimes I'll be chatting or surfing Facebook and an hour goes by and it seemed like 5 minutes. That hour could have been spent doing much more productive things. Facebook does have its positive attributes like helping people stay in touch but it also takes up way too much of our time.

  7. I completely agree with the post and all of the comments. I can't help but go on facebook every time I open my computer. It has become a horrible habit that is hard to stop. I haver never thought about deactivating it for a week, in fact I didn't even know you could do that. When school starts in the fall again I will definitely need to look into that because facebook distracts me whenever I'm doing work.

  8. I too share the same problem with Facebook. As soon as I open up the Internet I immediately click on the Facebook Bookmark. Most of the time I dont even realize it, its just a habit. Having the roommate change the password is a great idea. Wish i woulda thought of that earlier in the week.
